Last week, Apple unveiled its next generation smartwatch called the “Watch Series 2” and to the amazement of critics, it sure is an upgrade from the 1st generation watch, bringing on a lot more “smarts” to the equation.
The new Apple Watch Series 2 is indeed 50% more powerful in task processing than its predecessor as it packs a new dual core S2 CPU. It’s new GPU would also see it handle graphical outputs two times better than the Watch Series 1
Moving on to its externals, Apple sticks with the aluminium casing it used on the Series 1 with colour options such as silver, gold, rose gold and space grey available for your choice. Other variants include a Hermès designed option and all-out sports and fitness included Nike+ edition.
The major highlight in this category is the new White Ceramic casing option which Apple says is four times stronger than stainless steel and more scratch resistant. The new Watch Series 2 is also Apple’s Firs water resistant watch with the ability to survive up to 50 meters depth in a pool.
The display this time around has been stepped up in terms of brightness from the 450 nits present on the Watch 1 to 1,000 nits on the Watch 2. Apple says this is the brightest screen it has ever fitted on any of its devices. This new display would enhance the new Force Touch screen functions and is better adapted to GPS tracking related functions.
Apple upped the ante so far as health and fitness are concerned by including new monitors and sensors to track more accurately, heart rate, sleep, walking, cycling, swimming laps and styles, etc. This is due to the new GPS feature now in-built to the Watch Series 2.
The new Watch OS 3 that debuts with the Watch 2 brings a lot of new functions like the new Apple Breathe app that ensures you focus on breathing exercises for a timed period, instant launch of apps, faster performance and new watch faces.
The Watch Series 2 is available online on Apple’s website and other reputable online stores, starting from $269. Other variants including the Nike+ edition, Hermès edition, white ceramic, etc are said to cost $369, $1,499 & $1,249 respectively.
With Apple now the World’s Number 2 watch producer, we expect improved sales figures for the Watch Series 2 to further consolidate it’s position.
